The origins of the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria go back to 1478, when an army directed by the Spanish commander Juan Rejón, disembarked in La Isleta. They set up a camp with a fence made with trunks of palm trees. Juan rejón, without suspecting it, was founding therefore the capital of the province which acquired the name of Real de Las Palmas. The official name was granted to the city many years after the end of the conquest of Gran Canaria, in 1515, and has since carried that name. |
